SkyRocket’s SkyViper and its Ardupilotness – sUAS News

Last night Gary had a very interesting and in-depth chat with the team responsible for the new sub-250gram SkyViper $150 GPS equipped camera drone fitted with a custom Ardupilot.

From Ardupilot’s side, Dr. Andrew Tridgell (Tridge for those not familiar with his full name) and Luis Vale Gonçalves joined the chat along with Matt Morton from SkyRocket, the manufacturer of the SkyViper.

Loretta Alkalay, Gene Robinson and Bruce Simpson were also on hand as part of the discussion. Drone Stuff This Week happens every Tuesday at 21h00GMT on YouTube.

The SkyViper is targeted at ‘Buy & Fly’ regular consumers but having an Ardupilot on-board does open it up for DIYers to mod and hack. At a price point of $150, one would not have to wear kit gloves while messing with it either.

It will be very interesting to see if the DIY community takes to this system, and if they do, how far they would be able to push it in terms of performance and uses.

The V2450 SkyViper is set to hit the shelves soon with the following specs:

Weight: 118g
20 Frames Per Second Streaming
30 Frames Per Second to Micro SD Card (sold separately)
1280 x 720 Resolution
2.4 GHz Spread Spectrum Transmitter
Motors: 8.5mm x 20mm Brushed Coreless
3.7V 1200 mAh LiPo Battery
